YVI LAUNCHED VIRTUALLY IN JUNE 2021 . . .
P-Alliance’s Founder, Sherita Herring, initially created the Youth Veterinarian Initiative in 2019. In 2021, she collaborated with her colleague in Paris, France, Vet Pathologist, Dr. Monique Wells, with the Wells International Foundation, to launch the virtual YVI program. Beginning in June 2021, we launched the bi-weekly Zoom sessions with youth (ages 9-17). We were excited to have participation from all over the world, i.e., Switzerland, Uganda, and multiple cities across the U.S. Since its inception, YVI’s mission has been to offer an introduction to veterinary medicine, exposing young participants to the numerous vet careers that exist. Interviewing collaborating vets from all over the globe, they covered a multitude of topics related to their careers, while discussing the various animals they treat at their facilities (llamas, sheep, dogs, cats, chickens and so many others). Our YVI Program became a part of a Bronx Class Curriculum
Advancing youth and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math), our YVI program became a part of the curriculum at the South Bronx Early Learning Academy, with Science Teacher Danielle Corbin and her 90 6th grade students. As a culmination of the program, these students were looking forward to a camping experience in the Barnyard, but, because of lack of funding, we were not able to get the camp up and running.
Once funded and completed, our Youth Vet Camp will provide hands-on experiences that will include exposure to horses, cattle (beef and dairy), and goats, at collaborating facilities. Participating youth will run lab tests, milk cows and goats, and engage in a variety of additional activities that will introduce them to the field of veterinary medicine, while just having fun doing camp stuff.
