Recently named the President & CEO at the Maryland College of Osteopathic Medicine at Morgan State University, Dr. James E. Lyons, Sr., Ph.D., is an accomplished leader and administrator across U.S. higher education.
He is a six-time university president (including three interim appointments) and has strong ties to the State of Maryland, having served as President of Bowie State University and as Secretary of Higher Education under Governor Martin O’Malley. In addition to his presidency at Bowie State University, Dr. Lyons had the privilege of serving as President at Jackson State University and California State University Dominguez Hills and as Interim President at the University of the District of Columbia; Concordia College Alabama, in Selma, Alabama; and at Dillard University in New Orleans, LA; where he also served on the Board of Trustees following Hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Lyons and his wife, Jocelyn have been married over 50 years, and have three adult sons and nine grandchildren. This Fall the University Press of Mississippi will release his book “From the Projects to the Presidency.”

Is there an inner-artist hidden in you?
Joy has been interested in art for the greater part of her life. Spending most of her career as a professional educator, her interest and love for art never waned. Approximately 15 years ago she reconnected with her love of creating art and began painting full time. Being 'self-trained (no formal training artistic training), she has participated in group exhibits across the country.
As an abstract and figurative artist she aspires to create artwork that captures the beauty she sees in the world, including nature, people and interesting places like Costa Rica and Ghana. Using multiple mediums, she creates with oil and acrylic paints on canvas, wood panels, and paper, as she hopes to inspire others to look more closely at the beauty that exist all around them.

Episode 20 - How Are You Turning Lemons into Lemonade?
Today’s show was all about turning lemons into lemonade, by first identifying what brings you joy!
I didn’t have a guest, because I wanted to talk about finding joy, while reducing the everyday stressors that you can’t do anything about.
Stop worrying so much about the economy, crime and whatever else is raising your blood pressure, by doing more of what your God-given talents are.
Studies have shown that when we do more of what we love, it reduces stress, while making us feel more fulfilled in life
God gave us all gifts, but most don’t rely on those talents to sustain them. When we exercise our skills and talents, that’s God showing up and showing out through us!
Romans 12:6 states, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”
James 1:17 tells us that every gift is from God. We all have different talents and God-given gifts . . .
Episode 19 - With Special Guest Ty Pruitt -- January 17, 2024
We had an informative show today, with my special guest, Ty Pruitt.
With an established career in Hollywood, we discussed his award-winning film, A Week on Skid Row, while also talking about his book, Hood. In addition, we had to address the elephant in the room. While speaking to Ty, we could't negate the fact that he's also the cousin of Michal Brown, who was killed by a police officer on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, MO. As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s national holiday this week, more than 55 years after his death, it's remarkable that we’re still combatting racial injustice and inequality across the nation.

Focusing on the Power of Communication with my dear friend and colleague, Bill Stierle, in a short show, we covered a multitude of topics. Why is this show so timely? Because all over the world, it’s reported that new dimensions of uncertainty are emerging. To turn new doubts into opportunities, some kind of way we must unleash people’s creative and cooperative potential.
As an international communication specialist and high conflict mediator, utilizing Bill’s expertise, we went from talking about how to defuse a volatile conversation with a spouse, to addressing the need to improve the communication skills of our young people.
We also touched on the recent interview with Shannon Sharp and comedian, Katt Williams, and how do we get beyond the tone of the communicator, to hearing genuineness, and what is really being delivered.
Episode 17 with Haywood Galbreath -- November 29, 2023
As a History-Making Photo/Journalist, Actor, Motivational Speaker, and Media/Human Rights Advocate, Haywood had the distinct privilege of being the only Black Press photojournalist to have covered and been in the press pool of six U.S. Presidents (personally photographing three sitting presidents). In 2008, Haywood also photographed the young Senator, Barak Obama, during his visit to California as a Presidential Candidate.
One of his greatest career achievements is being the only photographer to have daily access to the largest criminal court case in America (the O.J. Simpson trial, deemed "the Trial of the Century”). See more about Haywood and his organization at https://mpji.org/.

Did you know there is more than a trillion dollars given annually in grants, and it’s not all Federal funding?
For instance, each year, Target donates over $7 million to the local communities where we do business
The Giving Pledge, started by Warren Buffett, and now has over 200 billionaires giving half their wealth away, has given over $600 billion in funding since 2016.
The U.S. Department of Education awards around $46 billion in scholarship money each year.
The above and so much more was discussed during this grant-impacted show, including the number of hours it takes to write a grant.

Episode 13 - Don't Believe the Malarkey You've Heard About Grants - October 25, 2023
DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU'VE BEEN HEARING!
if you've ever heard or believed any of the following, you should listen to this broadcast:
1) I can't get a grant for my project because it (equipment, supplies, etc.), cost too much!
2) Grant writing is too hard, and should be left to Grant Writers!
3) I don't know why I'd consider a grant - nonprofits can't make any money anyway!
4) It takes two years or more to get a grant!
5) I've been told that if I'm not a nonprofit, there's no way I can get a grant!
6) And last, but not least, grants and the nonprofit arena are a bunch of malarkey . . . I wouldn't waste my time!

Wow, talk about having to pivot when things unexpectedly change, today was one of those days!

In this show Sherita is very transparent about menopause, hysterectomies and the importance of having difficult conversations.
The following topics were discussed: 1) Dispelled the myths that some men have historically believed about menopause and hysterectomies 2) Men do experience menopausal symptoms during midlife, and why 3) The increase in divorces during mid-life crisis 4) ‘Common’ regrets that couples have experienced after divorcing. Sherita also shares the natural products that she used, that got rid of her menopausal systems, and the magical remedy that triggered her extreme hair growth, which reversed her hair thinning.
